Luke at One
Want to get to know Luke as a one year old? How big is he? What does he like to eat? What is his personality like? Here you go:
- He weighed 26lbs and 10oz and still measured 30.75 inches long at his one year physical. These results are just one more reason to be skeptical of the these nurses "measurements".
- He can still wear a few 18-month sized clothes, but 24-month clothes fit him best.
- He'll still eat just about anything you put in front of him. I'm trying to think of anything that he's turned down because he doesn't like the taste and nothing is coming to mind. Veggies? Check. Fruit? Check. Meat? Check. Sweets? Check. Salty snacks? Check.
- He's no longer on formula and moved straight to 2% milk, which he likes just fine, but he doesn't like it very cold. He really only likes the milk if it's room temperature or warmer, but we're working on expanding his horizons. He does LOVES a cold glass of water though.
- He gets two bottles of milk per day - one first-thing in the morning and another right before bed. He doesn't always get the one at the end of the day or always finish it; it just usually depends on how long it has been since dinner.
- He loves balls and balloons. But what one-year old doesn't, right?
- He's stubborn. Or if you're inclined to put it nicely, he's "focused". It could just be his age or an inaccurate memory of Jackson a this same age, but Luke's pretty bull-headed. Prime example: This morning Luke was pulling on the buttons on the back of our couch. I said "no". He did it again. I said "no-no" and move his hand away. He did it again. And again. And again. And again. You got the picture, I'm sure. As usual, he was just so mad at me for not letting him do what he wanted that he got all red-in-the-face, pouted, cried, yelled, and flipped his hands at me. He got over it after a few minutes and moved on to do something else. About 5 minutes later, I walked back into the room to find Luke pulling at the buttons again while saying "no-no-no-no" to himself. The little booger knows he's not supposed to be pulling on it but was doing it anyway! Jackson is and always has been the kind of kid that if you tell him "no", he immediately cries over the fact that you're being "mean" to him and he's so devastated that he forgets what he was told "no" about in the first place. Luke on the otherhand, can give a crap less that you don't want him to do/touch/eat it. He's gonna ignore you and your "no's" until you take it away from him. Same parents, totally different personalities.
- He's experiencing the typical one year old conflicting desires of wanting more independence but also wanting to me rightnexttoyou at the same time. Ugh, it can get annoying.
- He's not walking yet. He can pull to a stand and cruise a few steps while holding on to something, but he's not standing or walking independently.
- He loves to clap and wave.
- He will put his hands up in the air for both "SO big" and when you yell "touchdown".
- He hasn't really picked up any new words. He'll repeat "mmmmm" at dinner, say "ut-oh" and "all done". I'm close to calling "ball" his first official word, but I need to hear him say it again to know for sure. Of course he also says "ba" for balloon too, so maybe not.
- We tried to get him to use sign language for "more", "milk", and "eat". So far, the sign for "more" is the only one that he's got down pat. It looks more like a clap than the actual sign, but it's effective enough to let us know what he wants. He has also JUST gotten the sign for "milk", so he does it pretty inconsistently. He knows what the sign for "eat" means too, but he's not fond of using it himself.
- He still gets really excited when he first sees Jackson in the morning or when we pick him up from preschool.
- Up until now, Luke hasn't paid any attnetion to the TV. He's just starting to notice it now and pay attention for just a few minutes.
- I'm pretty sure his molars are getting close to breaking through. Or, at least, I hope so since that's the only reason I can think of why he's been drooling and chewing on his finger and whiny. If that's not the reason, I don't know what is then.
